Phillip Myer Kane

Phillip Myer Kane passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at his mountain home in Brevard after a three year battle with cancer, surrounded and survived by his wife and soul mate, Linda, mother, Nellie Mae, and four sons, Benjamin, John, Michael, and Harrison.

Born Oct 2, 1947, he was a native of Miami, Fla. and graduated from the University of Miami with a BSBA in 1969, followed by an MBA in 1983. After he started work with Arthur Anderson, Phil went on to Knight News-papers and orchestrated their merger with Ridder Public-ations into Knight Ridder and eventually rose to the position of vice president and controller.

In 1989 under Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Jack Kemp, he became the first CFO in the department’s history and the success of his programs directly led Congress to pass the CFO Act of 1991, requiring all federal agencies to centralize financial management under a qualified CFO.

Returning to the private sector until his retirement, he worked with multiple private educational companies, focusing from early childhood education through post-secondary education, while also becoming a specialist in increasing shareholder value by working with private equity firms to help purchase and consolidate companies.
